From personalized fabrics to lightweight yet durable construction, today’s custom banquet seating options deliver a number of solutions. Here’s a look at three examples:
Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center
With more than 470,000 sq. ft. of meeting, exhibit, pre-function and convention space and 89 event rooms, the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, MD, typically sets up and disassembles these spaces within a short period of time. Operated and owned by Marriott International, the hotel needed lightweight banquet seating to help reduce fatigue for the property’s maintenance crew. Additionally, Marriott’s design team wanted an aluminum-framed chair with a flexible back for guest comfort. Enter MTS Seating.
MTS Seating, based in Temperance, MI, was able to design and provide prototype samples for the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center within a short time frame. The company offered a lightweight aluminum-stacking chair from the Salvo Series in the company’s MTS Burgess Collection.
“It was a collaborative process with Marriott design and the property from start to finish,” said John Menas, EVP of sales, MTS Seating. “We listened to what they were looking for in terms of banquet seating and provided them with a solution that met those requirements.”
The chair is ultralight, weighing less than 15 pounds. “The chair features a unique shaped back that fits the design aesthetic of the property,” said Menas. “The chair has the MTS Comfort web seat and Comfort flex back, both which provide superior comfort for guests. And, with a 12-year frame warranty, the property is rest assured that it will have a design-driven, durable product for many years to come.”
SLS Hotel & Casino
Following a three-year, $415-million renovation of the former Sahara Hotel & Casino, located at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, the SLS Hotel & Casino offers a modern aesthetic through a combination of style, luxury, service and creativity, according to owner SBE Entertainment. The hotel extended this vision across 80,000 sq. ft. of event space.
Avenue Interior Design was commissioned to design the meeting venues. “An overriding desire for the design was a banquet chair that didn’t look like a standard banquet chair, and one that wasn’t heavy or cumbersome,” said Brandon Ross, EVP of sales & marketing, MityLite. “They wanted something that looked different and distinct.”
Through trusted partnerships and prior relationships, MityLite was invited to present a custom banquet seating option to the hotel’s design team. The ideal chair was discussed and then drawn on a slip of paper, refined by MityLite, and a sample was designed. MityLite’s Royale Series, a modern interpretation of the classic dining chair, was created and now adds to SLS’ contemporary palette.
The series offers a durable aluminum frame that met the design team’s lightweight specifications. The seat supports more than 1,000 pounds, and the two-coat, “wet” frame finish is available in seven colors. “They loved it,” said Ross. “The series offers a clean, fresh look, especially compared to sterile, utilitarian seating options. They wanted a more upscale look, and they got it.”
MityLite employs a team of in-house designers who handle custom orders from the ground up. “Most companies would change the fabric or redo the frame, but we approach each custom design from a blank slate,” said Ross. “Our turnaround time is also very fast.”
On any given day, the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles hosts more than 20 meetings and conferences and as many as 3,000 guests in a single meeting room. Having worked with the hotel in the past, Bertolini understood that stackability, comfort and performance were key needs for the property’s 110,000 sq. ft. of meeting space.
“While many properties might stack, move and unstack their chairs two to three times a week, the Westin Bonaventure may do so four to five times a day—or more,” said Jeff Sladick, director of sales, Bertolini. “In addition to having a chair that Starwood would approve in terms of cosmetics, it also needed a chair that could take extreme use and still look beautiful in its newly renovated conference space, while providing superior comfort for the high-end clientele it often hosts.”
After meeting with hotel management and key staff members to discuss their needs in detail, Bertolini’s team worked directly with Starwood Hotels & Resorts to ensure that the chair would meet brand specifications. As a domestic manufacturer with raw material suppliers located within a 20-mile radius, Bertolini was able to create several custom production samples of the chair with four different seat variations, each with a custom foam providing several options in support, comfort and firmness.
Within two weeks, the Westin Bonaventure had a production sample of a custom chair. “With the Westin Bonaventure hotel, what really set us apart was our ability to be very agile with modification and customization of a more traditional banquet chair style, and offer a seat foam option which is not offered by any other manufacturer,” said Sladick. “We also incorporated some new internal components, which allowed us to reduce the overall weight of the chair for easier stacking while maintaining the durability we are known for.” HB
